Sikkim is a tiny, remote and mountainous state that is bounded by Tibet in the north, Bhutan in the east, Nepal in the west and Bengal in the South with an area of 7,325 sq. kms. Its elevation ranges from 8000 ft. to 28000 ft. ASL. Sikkim is a tourist paradise, with its ice-clad peaks framed by dense tropical vegetation, forested slopes and ridges, fast flowing rivers and undisturbed peace. Flora and fauna is rich - the rhododendrons are abundant, as also the orchids, magnolias and the Primulas. The forests abound with black and brown bear, barking deer, musk deer. Sambhar, trout, salmon and carp. There are over six hundred varieties of birds and an equal number of varieties of butterflies. The Sikkimese are simple people and deeply religious. The best time to visit Sikkim is mid February to late May, and then October to December.East Sikkim, beyond Rongle, and north Sikkim beyond Phodong, are restricted areas; they are restricted for Indian citizens also. In the west Sikkim, foreigners are allowed to visit Pemayangtse and Tashiding, and in case of group Dzongri. In south Sikkim only Namcha and naya bazaar can be visited. |
