Throughout the history man has been drawn towards the mountains. They have represented the path to the heavens. Years ago, pilgrims traveled through dangerous terrain in search of divine enlightenment.

In the 8th century A.D., Adi Shankaracharaya trekked in the mountains of Garhwal Himalayas and opened trekking routes in this part of the country. Later traders, hunters and shepherds trekked through the mountains and established trade routes leading into China and Tibet. In the 19th century, explorers from Europe set out to conquer the Himalayan peaks. They carried out numerous expeditions to scale the highest peak of them all, Mt. Everest. The British explorers and surveyors were the pioneers in mountaineering. Located in the foothills of the mighty Himalayas, India provided a great opportunity to these explorers. Even today the 2000-mile strech of the Himalayan ranges offers the toughest and the most beautiful mountains for thrill seekers and casual trekkers.

Trekking is often confused with mountaineering, which is a very technical and dangerous sport. Mountaineering requires hours of planning and highly professional equipment, where as, trekking is a very casual affair. A trek in the quiet and peaceful hills of Garhwal is the best getaway from the dull and monotonous city life and it also provides of getting to know the people and the culture of Garhwal.

The hills of Uttar Pradesh are blessed with snow-capped mountains, gushing rivers, dense forests and verdant valleys. Small wonders therefore that they offer unlimited opportunities for sports adventure, something for everyone. To fire the sprit of adventure in you and to turn your stay into a memorable experience in this paradise, U.P. Tourism with the co-operation of Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam and Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam have designed a range of Package Tours.
