The land of the Brahmaputra Valley

Assam, the land of the Brahmaputra Valley, is a beautiful hill state of the northeastern region of India. Commonly referred to as the ‘Tea Garden State’ of India, it is also the largest of the north-east states, bounded by the Majestic Himalayas in the North and the Shillong plateau in the South. The Brahmaputra valley, a prominent physical feature of Assam, lies at the foothills of the Himalayas. This valley provides a scintillating view of the lush green tea gardens spread across an endless stretch, and the beautiful mountain ranges of the Himalayas. The mighty Brahmaputra, one of the great rivers of the world, runs through it like a ‘life line’, providing the Assam valley with a fertile alluvial plain. Brahmaputra, which literally means "The Lord of the Universe’, is considered to be the Lord of Assam because it manifests itself both as a creator and destroyer.

As depicted in the great epic Ramayana, Assam was known as ‘Kamarupa’ in the ancient times. According to a popular myth, when Lord Shiva was in meditation, Kama – the God of Love, tried to arouse passion in him. An enraged Shiva opened his third eye and destroyed Kama. However, later he forgave him and brought him back to life. Since then, Assam came to be known as ‘Kamarupa’ – the land where Kama got back his ‘Rupa’ or form.

The name Assam can be said to have been derived from a number of sources. It is believed that in the thirteenth century, some fierce tribal warriors from Burma's Iravady Valley, who were known as 'Ahoms', conquered the inhabitants of Kamarupa. Assam probably got her name from these new inhabitants of Kamarupa. The name Assam may also have been derived from the sanskrit word ‘Asom’ which means ‘undulating or uneven’, thus symbolizing  the rugged nature of this land.

This land, abound with scenic wonders, is famous for the production of high quality tea, which is exported all over the world. The famous Kaziranga National Park, home to India’s one-horned Rhino, and the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary are located here. Besides this, some well  known and popular temples like the Navagrah and Umananda temples are also located here. This beautiful land is agog with a variety of animal and bird species alongwith a luxuriant vegetation. Assam also boasts of a rich cultural heritage which is quite evident from the fact that its population is a mixture of Mongolian–Tibetan, Aryan and Burman ethnic origins, with the hill tribes of Mishings, Bodos, Karbis, Garos, Khasis and Hajongs, living together in perfect harmony. Assam is famous for its exquisite handicrafts of ivory, wood, bamboo and cane as well as important silk products namely Eri, Muga and Pat. Practically, every household is involved in the production of silk or cotton clothes of exquisite designs.

Assam is easily accessible from different parts of India by air or land. Tourists visit this place every year to enjoy and be one with nature. Its natural beauty, people, flora and fauna, climate and other important features is what sets it apart from other places.
