NAVAGRAH TEMPLE

As the name symbolizes, this temple is the temple of nine planets. Since the ancient times, Navagrah Temple has been famous as a centre of astrology and astronomy. Inside the main temple, there are nine lingas, which represent the nine planets of our solar system.

This temple is located on the Chitranchal hill to the east of Guwahati.

UMANANDA TEMPLE

Umananda Temple is a well-known temple in Assam dedicated to Lord Shiva, which has an interesting location. This temple is located on peacock island in the middle of the Brahmaputra river. For making this temple easily approachable ferry services ply across the river, bringing devotes in large numbers. Another interesting feature of this temple is that it has several rock–cut figures of Gods and Goddesses on its walls, which represent exquisite Assamese Craftsmanship.

KAMAKHYA TEMPLE

Kamakhya temple is one of the most important and best known temples of Guwahati. It is dedicated to sati, consort of lord Shiva, and is thus a centre for Shakti (energy) worship and Tantric Hinduism.

Legend has it that when Shiva sorrowfully carried away the body of his wife Sati her limb (yoni) fell here. The deity was installed at the place where her limb fell. According to another legend, a demon king Narkasur built this temple.

Kamakhya temple is situated atop the Nilachal Hill, 10 Kms. west of Guwahati. Thousands of pilgrims throng this temple every year from all over India, to offer their prayers to the deity, especially during the Ambubachi Mela and Manasha Puja.

VASHISHT ASHRAM

This is a place worth visiting in Guwahati. This ashram is named after the great sage Vashisht, who was the Guru of Rama. It is believed that in ancient times, sage Vashisht had his ‘ashram’ (retreat) here. Hence, this place holds a lot of importance from the religious point of view. Pilgrims visit this ashram often to pay their respects.

Vashisht ashram is situated amongst picturesque surroundings. This beautiful scenic spot has three streams namely the Sandhya, Lalita and Kanta, flowing nearby. Thus this ashram is frequented not only by the pilgrims, but the tourists as well. It is located at a distance of 15 km. south of Guwahati.

DA-PARBATIYA

This temple is situated in Tezpur and has an ancient history. Da- Parbatiya is famous for its ancient architecture dating back to the Gupta period in the 5th and 6th centuries. This structure is not bigger than a door framed, but its exquisite carvings represents the finest example of Gupta art.

DARGAH OF AJAN PIR

This is a famous Dargah dedicated to the Muslim saint Saha Aulia alias Ajan Fakir. He was a Muslim reformist who led a reform movement in Assam and is held in high veneration by the Muslims. His Dargah is an important pilgrimage place for the Muslims and Hindus alike. It is located at Sahaguri Chapari, on place near Sibsagar in Assam.
