KEDARNATH TEMPLE  

There are more than 200 Shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva in Chamoli district itself; the most important is Kedarnath. Kedarnath shrine, is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva is a scenic spot situated against the background of majestic snowy Kedarnath range.
'Kedar' is also another name for lord Shiva - the protector and the destroyer. There are 200 shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva in Chamoli distinct itself, the most important is Kedarnath. Shrine of Kedarnath lying at the altitude of 3584 Mts. on the head of river Mandakini is amongst the holiest pilgrimages for the Hindu.
The origin of revered temple can be found in great epic Mahabharat. After the wars, the Pandavas lost their peace of mind after committing the great sin of slaying their Guru and brothers and sought the blessing of Lord Shiva for redemption. Lord Shiva avoid them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge at Kedarnath in the form of bull. On being followed, He dived into the ground, leaving behind His hump of the surface. The hump is worshipped in the temple of Kedarnath in the conical Shiva pinda form.The remaining portions of Lord Shiva are worshipped at other places.

Tungnath for the arms (Bahu)
Rudranath for the face (Mukha)
Madmaheshwar for the navel (Nabhi)
Kalpeshwar for the hairs (Jata)

Jointly these five parts are worshipped as Panch Kedars.The Lingam at Kedarnath is pyramidal alike its usual form statue of Nandi -the celestial Bull stand at the entrance of temple and exquisitely carved images adorn the interiors of the temple.
Words can not express the true real feeling experienced by an individual when he is surrounded with so much beauty, majestic in style and architecture, constructed of evenly cuts from massive stone slabs temple along with the village is situated on a large glaciers terrace. The walls of the temple are embellished with large sized images of deities and scenes from mythology.
The shrine has a 'Mandap' and a 'Garbha Griha' in the centre of rich is a conical rock (The Hump of the Bull), encircled by a narrow 'Pradikshana Path', which is worshipped as Lord Shiva. In the Mandap right in front of the Shiva 'Pinda is Nandi, the divine bull an Shiva's Mount, in the courtyard facing the Garbha Griha is a very large Nandi- here again one wonders of the massive stone, on which the bull is carved, was brought up to these heights. Outside, there are many idols and small temples. The temple is made of Grey stones and with a gilded pinnacle. The large Grey steps of the temple have inscriptions in Pali or Brahmi.

Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi

The Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya is located just behind the Kedarnath temple. He had borne Kalady in Kerala in the 7th century AD. Tamil Saint Adi guru Shankaracharya traveled North India on his mission to restore Hinduism northern part. As it is said that after establishing four sacred Dhams in India, he went into his Samadhi at an early age of 32 years.

Vasuki Tal

Situated at the height of 4, 150 Mt., the lake is surrounded by high mountains and offers an excellent view of Chaukhamba peaks. A short distance Northwest is the beautiful Painya Tal where through the clear water you can see the rectangular rocks that form the lake bottom.
A guide is necessary.

Gaurikund

It is the base for a trek to Kedarnath and serves as roadhead. The village has a temple dedicated to Gauri and hot water springs.

DEORIA TAL

Tal means the lack. This lack has captivating surroundings with forests all around. The reflection of the mighty Chaukhamba peak in the lake produces a beautiful effect. It is situated on the Chopta-Ukhimath road about 4 Kms. from road head at Sari Village.The road is motorable upto sari village 10 kms. From Ukhimath from where one has to trek about 4 Kms. All arrangement has to be made for a night halt at the spot.

UKHIMATH

This is the winter seat of Lord Kedarnath, and worship is done here during the winters when the temple of the Kedarnath remains closed. The temple of Usha and Anirudh, Shiva and Parvati are worth visit.
There is a TOURIST BUNGALOW AND P.W.D. INSPECTION HOUSE.

Agastyamuni

The temple of sage Agastyamuni is the main attraction here.

TRIYUGINARAYAN

Mythology has it that the wedding of Lord Shiva and Sati was solemnized here in the presence of Lord Vishnu. Of special interest is an eternal fire, which never extinguishes.It is situated at a distance of 4 km on foot from Auli.
There is a Dharamshala AND P.W.D. INSPECTION HOUSE.
Guptkashi
This is the place where Lord Shiva proposed to Parvati. Guptkashi has a great importance quite like that of Kashi. Guptkashi is famous for the temples of Ardhnarishwar and Vishwanath, where the two streams of Ganga and Yamuna meet are the main attractions.
After the wars, the Pandavas lost their peace of mind after committing the great sin of slaying their Guru and brothers and sought the blessing of Lord Shiva for redemption. Lord Shiva did not want to meet them, the reason being that although they had fought for the right cause they were also responsible for destroying their own dynasty.
Guptkashi is situated at an altitude of 1319 Mts

Chandrashila
The chandrashila peaks provides a rare panoramic view of innumerable snow clad peaks. The trek from Tungnath passes through forests of rhododendron and alpine meadows.
