Badrinath, one of the 'Four Dhams' is one of the most celebrated
pilgrimage spots of country and is situated at an elevation of
3,133 Mts. guarded on either side by two mountain Ranges known as Nar And Narayan with
towering Neelkhanth Peak as the background. Once the spot was carpeted with 'Badris' or
wild Berries and hence was given the name 'Badrinath' meaning 'forest of Barriers'. The
Badrinath temple is located on the right back of Holy River Alaknanda.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and the top is 15. Mts. in height built in the form of a cone with a small cupola of gold colored bull and spire. Adi Guru Shankaracharya - the temple's philosopher- saint of the 8thcentury, has built the present temples. The temple has been renovated several times due to damage by mass of snow and stone etc. falling from the mountainside. Its colorful 'Singh Dwara' or main entrances give it a new look. The temple is divided into three parts - the 'Garbha Griha' or sanctum, the 'Darshan Mandap', where the ritual sanctum sanctorum is conducted and the 'Sabha Mandap' where the devotees assemble. The canopy has 15 idols. Especially attractive is the one-Mt. high image of Badrinath, intricately sculpted in black stone. It represents Lord Vishnu seated in mediation pose. Other images include those of Laxmi, Garurh, Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha. It is believed that Adi Guru Shankaracharya from Narad Kund recovered the idol of Badrinath, just a few yards away from hot water spring that established this temple. The temple remains closed during the winter season and is open from April to October-November.
