The historic city of Chamoli is an ancient town and has been mentioned in the  Taleshwar copper plate grant, one of the plates left behind by the ancient Katyuri kings, who ruled Kumaon from the 3rd century A.D. onward till the 14th century when the Chand kings rose to power.

Chamoli was initially a part of the Pauri Garhwal district but it was declared a separate border district in the year 1960. Gopeshwar is the district headquarters of Chamoli. The whole district of Chamoli is covered with shrines, which attract thousands of pilgrims every year. There are small and big temples scattered and the places to which they offer to stay are known as 'chattis'. Chamoli was initially a chatti type group of huts, which were situated on the banks of the river Alaknanda. Mule tracks led the pilgrims to Badrinath and Kedarnath.

Chamoli as a district has a large number of beautiful as well as spiritual places to offer. Badrinath, Kedarnath, Valley of Flowers, Hemkund Sahib are yet to name just a few places in this beautiful district of Chamoli.
