Forest Research
Institute: (FRI)
The Forest Research Institute, commonly known, as F.R.I. is the only Institute of it's
kind in the whole of Asia. This Institute is spread over a large area and is a very
popular picnic spot. The Institute maintains 6 museums, which deal with all the different
subjects in forestry, be it botany or zoology, the museums are a feast for the eyes as
well as for the mind. Tickets are available in the building itself for exploring the
museums. The F.R.I. is at a distance of 5 kms from the city.Recorded as the best centre on
Himalayas Geology,
the institute maintains a museum displaying the geological diversity of the sub-continent.

Sericulture Centre
The Sericulture Centre comprises of the Mulberry Demonstration Farms; Grainage Section;
Research Section and the Cocoon Stiffing Section, which are worth visiting. This institute
is in Premnagar at a distance of 8 Kms. from the city.
Sahastradhara
Noted for its natural beauty and medicinal (Sulfur) waterfalls. It is very popular spot
for picnics and entertainment. Regular bus service and private taxies are available. A
Tourist bungalow and P.W.D. inspection House are available.14kms.From Dehra Dun city.Season:Round
the Year.
Robber's Cave
Also known as (Guchchu Pani), it is one of the most famous picnic spots of Dehra Dun. It
is situated near the cantonment. Here a stream of water disappears from sight, but a few
meters away, it suddenly reappears as a gushing stream. Here a beautiful cave is present
through which the river flows. The Robber's Cave is accessible by bus till Anarwala for a
distance of 6.4 Kms, the remaining 1.5 kms has to be covered by foot. 8kms.From the Dehra
Dun city.
Lakshman Sidh
Built in homage to the saint Swami Laxman Siddh, Lakshman Sidh, it is an ideal picnic
spot.12kms.From Dehra Dun.
Tapovan
This is a beautiful place, which has an Ashram, which is open to tourists. A motorable
road leads to this place. This is very beautiful and a calm route with placid
surroundings. In the days of the Mahabharat, Drona Acharya, the legendary Kuru prince,
took penance in this forest retreat.
Tapovan is at a distance of 5 Kms from Dehra Dun. The motorable road covers 3.5 Kms. of
the journey while the rest of the distance has to be covered on foot. |

Mal Devta
Mal Devta is a good picnic spot situated at the distance of 4 Kms. from Raipur. Mal Devta
is 9.7 Km. from Dehra Dun.

Mahasu Devta
This temple had been originally constructed in the 'Huna' architectural style, but it
acquired a mixed style. The deity of 'Mahasu' is worshipped in this temple which is
situated in the village of Hanol, on the eastern bank of the Tamas (Tons)
According to the legend, a demon lived here and killed and ate at least one man from the
near by villages every day. In Mandrath, one of the villages, a man decided not to go to
this demon. He worshipped Shiva with all his heart and soul. Shiva who was impressed by
the man's dedication decided to help the man. Shiva directed Deolari Devi, one of his
woman devotees to help the man. On hearing the man's story she requested her four sons to
go to Madrath. She also asked the man to plough his fields. On doing so the man discovered
4 Shivaling-subsequently named Maasu,Pavasi, Vasik and Chalda, after the names of Deolari
Devi's four sons, who she sent a search of the demon. They surrounded the demon from all
sides and in a battle lasting several days, the demon was killed. The villagers rejoiced
and Shiva was worshipped as Mahasu everafter.
The Mahasu Devta temple is situated 1429mts. Above sea level and from Dehradun it is at a
distance 188 Kms.
Tapkeshwar
Mahadev Temple
This temple is in Garhi in the Dehra Dun cantt area. According to a legend, the warrior -sage Dronacharya had meditated
on the banks of river Tamas (Tons) which traversed through a deep gorge during Dwaparyug.
That is why this cave Temple is called Drona gufa.
The temple was originally called Tapeshwar and Tapkeshwar is a distortion of the same.The
natural formation of two Shivlings -including the one which Dronacharya worshipped is a
remarkable feature of this cave temple.It is situated at a distance of 5 km from Dehradun
City.
Lakhamandal
Temple
It is situated near Mussoorie on Mussoorie-Yamunotri road. Lakhamandal is believed to be
the place where Duryodhana of Mahabharat episode conspired to burn alive the Pandavas in
the Lakhyagriha a house specially constructed with shellac( Lac).
It is situated at a distance of 80 Kms. from Mussoorie.
Poanta Saheb
Gurdwara of Guru Govind Singh is situated at the on bank of Yamuna river It is 16Kms.from
Dakpathar. People from far and near come to worship and see the beauty of the nature.
