Ardh Kumbha & Maha Kumbha Though all the hindu festivals are celebrated here, but it is the Ardh Kumbha which attracts the mind of any tourists in Haridwar, Ardh Kumbha fair is held every six years and Maha Kumbh fair every 12 yrs. The origin of the Kumbh is very old and dates back to the thime when an as (Amritakalasha) was recovered from Samudramanthan (during of the sea), for which a tense war between Devtas (Gods) and Asuars (Demons) were eminent. To prevent the Amritakalasha being forcibly taken into possession by Asuras, who were more powerful than Devtas, its safety was entrusted to the Devtas Brahaspati, Surya, Chandra and Shani. The four Devtas ran away with the Amrit akalasha to hide it from the Asuras. Learning the consipracy of Detas, Asuras turned furioces and chased the 4 devtas running with amritakalasha. The chase, lasted 12 days and nights during which the Devtas and Aswas went round the earth and during this chase, Devtas put amritakalasha at Haridwar, Prayag, Ujjain and Nasik. To commemorate this holy event of the Amritakalasha being put at 4 places, Kumbha is celebrated every 12 years. According to other Pauranic legends, actual fight took place between dentas and Asuras resulting in the amritakalash being knoken, out of which Amrita (Nectar) fell down at the above 4 places. The date of Kumbh at Haridwar falls when Venus and Jupiter coincide with Aquarius, and seen and Moon are in the Aries and Sagittarius zodiacs respectively. |
