Popularly known as the "Queen of Hills", Mussoorie is famous for
its scenic beauty. The views are heavenly, comprising of the Himalayas clad
in perennial snow in the North, and the rich and varied expanse of the city of Dehra Dun
bounded by the Shivalik Ranges on the South. It's history dates back to 1827 when Captain
Young, an adventurous military officer, explored the present site and laid the foundation
of this holiday resort.
Before Independence of
India this place was a favourite of the Europeans. This can be estimated by the figures.
The population of the Mussoorie recorded in a Census held in September 1900 was 14,689. Of
this number 3,418 were Europeans. This number grew to 4,471 in March 1901. One of the
residents of this town was Sir George Everest, First Surveyor General of India, who had
his office and residence here. The highest peak in the world, Mount Everest, is named
after him.
You may also find a
building with an architectural beauty known as Chateau Kapurthala, which was erected before the
Independence of India by the Raja of that state. This is solidly built in the French style
and presents a great and pleasing contrast to the adjacent houses.
Mussoorie is at a distance
of 36 Kms. from Dehradun and is situated at an altitude of 3000 Mts. above sea level.
