Well-developed terraces surround their situated on
the bank of Bhagirathi, the town from Bhatwari to Pauri while forests of birch and pine
cover the steep hill sites. In this romantic town are places, temples built by the old
rulers. Tehri is at the junction of four important roads, which branch off to Deoprayag,
Uttarkashi, Srinagar and Tilwara. While coming from Rishikesh the road to Uttarkashi and
Dharasu Branches at Dobata. According to the history of Garhwal, king of Garhwal gave away
half of his kingdom to the Britisher as a gesture of gratitude for freeing Garhwal from
Gorkhas. The Nepalees left but the British got in exchange Shimla, Mussoorie, Almora,
Ranikhet, Landour, and Nanital from Kumaon and half of Garhwal including the capital
Srinagar. The Maharaja then set out in search of a site for his new capital. As the king reached the Sateshwar Shivaling Temple, his horse refused to move, the king took this as a message from providence and decided to built his capital at the very spot. It lasted for a century and four Maharajas ruled from Tehri-Sudarshan Sah, Bhavani Sah, Pratap Sah and Kirti Sah. The capital of Garhwal State was shifted from SRINAGAR to Tehri situated at confluence of Bhagirathi and Bhilangna River and the kingdom came to know as state of Tehri Garhwal. It was merged with free India immediately after independence of the country in 1947. The state was made a district within the division of Kumaon. The newly developed district headquarters of the district of Tehri Garhwal is a recent creation. It is about 12 Kms. from Chamba. It would become an important centre of attraction on the completion of dam at Tehri.
