Uttarkashi
is an important pilgrimage place equated with Varanasi or Kashi in divinity. This is a town chockfull of temples,
historical monuments, 'Ashrams' and 'Dharamshalas'. On the banks of the Bhagirathi,
surrounded by the rivers Varuna and Assi, this sacred, fast developing town is the capital
of the newly constituted western most district of the Uttrakhand sub division. From the
religious point of view it is considered important because the temple of Lord Vishwanath,
is located here where a massive iron trident is erected. Among the other temples in this
town filled with splendor are the temples of Parashuram, Kali and that of the Ekadash
Rudra, built by the former Maharaja of Jaipur. Besides the Anglo Sanskrit College, and the
old seat of the deputy collector, there are the kshettras of the Baba Kali Kamli Walla,
the Maharaja of Jaipur and the Punjab Sindh kshettras. The district is more important
because of two very significant pilgrimage-centres viz. Gangotri and Yamunotri, the source
of the two rivers, Ganga (Bhagirathi) and Yamuna.
Uttarkashi was originally a part of Tehri Garhwal. But soon after independence, when Tehri Garhwal kingdom merged with India, It was made a district of the Kumaon Division. In 1960 it was made a border district with the district headquarters at Uttarkashi. Every year on the occasion of 'Magh Mela" (January 14th) people from far and near visit Uttarkashi to take a holy dip in Bhagirathi along with the idol of their local deities.
