Region – Kumaon

Pindari Glacier  Located in the Komaon region of Uttarakhand, Pindari offers a breath taking environment as well as view of the Himalayas. Also known as a trekker’s paradise, Pindari is easier to visit than most glaciers. This glacier is situated between Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot Mountains. This glacier is the place from where the river Pindar originates. The glacier is at an altitude of 3353 m.Covered extensively by trekkers, to get to Pindari one has to get to Bageshwar from there get a local bus to Bharari, from here one goes to Song by bus and then to Lohakhet. Dhakuri is 11 kms from Lohakhet. The view from Dhakuri provides a spectacular view of the Nanda Devi. From Dhakuri we reach Khati (8 kms), following the Pindar we reach Dwali which is the confluence of Pindar and Kaphini rivers. The next halt is Phurkiya, which also has a GMVN rest house. This is the base camp for going upto to the 4000m zero point and the snout of the majestic Pindar glacier. On either side one can see the peaks of Panwali Dhar and Nanda kot.

Kafni Glacier Near the Pindari glacier is located Kafni glacier. Located at an altitude of 3853 Mts., Kafni glacier is an exquisite and untouched place. One could reach the summit from a side road from Pindari. It is definitely a worthwhile visit.

Sundar Dhunga Glacier   Relatively a lesser-known glacier, Dhunga can be reached from Khati village (for more details refer to Pindari glacier writes up). People who are mainly doing Pindari glacier normally visit Dhunga. Dhunga is located at a height of 3880 Mts. This massive snow clad mountain provides a picturesque view to the surroundings.

If one is doing the Pindari glacier, it is definitely worth going to Sunder Dhunga Glacier.

Milam Glacier Located at a height of 4,100 m, Milam glacier provides a superb view of the clear ice and the ever so mystical Himalayan range. Located in the Kumaon region the glacier stands in one of the remotest regions of the Himalayas. The glacier is located at a distance of 5 kms from Milam village. The village is relatively quite. An easy trek, the glacier can be reached.

The trekking route to the glacier is as follows – One must get to Munsyari, a 10-hour drive from Almora. From Munsyari we trek 12 kms to Lilam. The next halt is at Bagudiar, at a distance of 19 kms. From Bagudiar we reach Rilkote trekking 15 km and then from Rilkote to Milam, a 14-km walk. The final stretch is steep that is from Milam to the Milam glacier. On this route a number of halts provide places to stay. One can also camp. This 65-km trek is truly adventurous.

Ralam Glacier At a distance of 15 km from Ralam village, this glacier can be visited if one is trekking in the Nanda Devi region. Ralam village a steep drops of below the pass (Brijganga).

Region – Garhwal

The Garhwal region is home to some of the most beautiful glaciers. One of them is Gaumukh glacier.

Gaumukh Glacier
Gaumukh, the cow's mouth or the source of Ganges is one of the most spectacular sights in the Himalayan region. Gaumukh is 18 kms from the religious town of Gangotri in the Uttrakhand region of the state.

Gaumukh can be reached from Gangotri only on foot. The trek route covers Bhojbasa that is 14 kms from Gangotri and at a height of 3800 Mts. 5-km before Bhojbasa is Chirbasa, where rest can be sought. There is place to tent as well as a Rest House. The trek after Bhojbasa is steep and arduous. It can take approximately 2 hours. There are plenty of teahouses for refreshments.

Gaumukh, the main source of the Ganges is at the mouth of the Gaumukh glacier where blocks of glacier ice fall into the river and pilgrims cleanse themselves in freezing water. Gaumukh is an awesome sight, a towering face of blue ice with an enormous cavern out of which come the Bhagirathi (Ganga). Gaumukh is like paradise where one would find things in its purist form. The clean air, the lovely and panoramic view and the holy glacier form a truly delightful combination. One must visit Gaumukh.
