Sirmaur lies on the southern most tip of the state. The rest of the districts all lie above it. To its north is Shimla and to its west is Solan. In the south is the state of Haryana, while in the east is the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district is flanked by the Shivaliks and the Lower Himalayan ranges. The various rivers and streams which merge into the Yamuna river, all flow through this district. Near its southern border is the religious town of Paonta Sahib. The place is dedicated to the memory of Guru Govind Singh and is situated on the right side of the Yamuna River. Some of the other towns, which one can visit, are Nahan, Renuka, Rajgarh, Gohra and Naina.

The Sirmaur district has the Shivalik hills in the south and the northern parts are made up of the forests and ravines of the first and second belt of the Himalayan ranges. The places here have man made lakes as well as natural ones, temples, tea gardens and ruins of ancient and not so ancient forts. This district connects the hills of Uttar Pradesh to the hills of Himachal. This district is ideal for those who want peace and  love to ramble on through natural surroundings. ‘Nahan’ is the district headquarters and has a pleasant climate throughout the year. The word means ‘invincible’ and is a place that has been cultivated over the years. It celebrates the end of the monsoons. In this festival 52 idols of the Hindu Gods are carried in a procession to the local Jagannath temple. Here they are placed in a pool and then returned to their proper places at midnight. ‘Trilokpur’, a place nearby also holds a fair, twice in a year. It is dedicated to the Goddess ‘Bala Sundari’. The highest peak of the area is the ‘Churdhan peak’. You can visit it by passing through the villages of Dadahu, Sangrah, Bhawai, Gandhuri and Nahura. The ‘Renuka Lake’ is a place of interest for the pilgrims as well as the general tourists. It is said to be the most beautiful lake of Himachal. Its shape is said to be that of a sleeping woman. In November, the Renuka Fair is held in honour of the mother of Parshu Ram (that is Renuka Devi).

Some other places that one can visit are ‘Sirmuri Tal’ and ‘Bhangani’. The hills of Sirmaur grow cereals and basic agricultural products. The upper regions of the district are dedicated to Horticulture. The folklore, legends, folk music, dances even the crafts and paintings of the area have a backdrop of chivalry, heroism and patronage. The staple diet of the people here is wheat, rice, corn (maize), pulses (cereals), potatoes, milk products and beans.
