The hill town of Munnar is located in the north east part of Kerala. Standing at an altitude of 1524m in the Western Ghats, it is the commercial center of some of the world’s highest tea growing estates.

The area was earlier known as the High Range of Travancore. Set amidst spectacular scenery, this hill station is famous for beautiful manicured tea plantations, which dot the hill station.

From Munnar you can see Anamudi (2695m) South India’s highest peak. The peak can only be climbed for study purposes, as it constitutes a core forest area. .

PRIME SITES

CHRIST CHURCH: If you visit Munnar, make it a point to visit the stone Christ Church. Constructed in 1910, this beautiful church is embellished with fine stained glass work. As the town has many tea estates, there are brass plaques inside the church, honoring the memory of the tea planters. The Church of South India now administers the church.

EXCURSIONS

The ERAVIKULAM NATIONAL PARK is at a distance of 16km from MUNNAR .At this N.P you can see the rare Nilgiri Tahr (a type of mountain goat).

You can also visit the MUDAPETTY DAM, which is only 10km from MUNNAR (on the way to Top station). You can also enjoy boating and horse riding here.

You can visit these places or just take walks around Munnar. The air is fresh and crisp and the scenery splendid.

Munnar is approachable from Tamil Nadu also.

A wide variety of accommodations are available. However, those with budgetary constraints will find it difficult to stay here. Besides the PWO Guest house(rooms for Rs.50) , some of the private hotels offering accommodation are as follows :SreeNarayana , Issac’s The Residency , Edassery Eastend etc.

Besides restaurants, you can find good food from stalls in the bazaar and near the Gandhi state.

There are several tourist offices in the town and besides providing information they also arrange tours to nearby places of interest. The Tourist Information Service (opposite the Gandhi state) provides detailed and authentic information.
