Almora is a charming mountain resort, which encloses the central Kumaon region. It is located atop a high saddle-shaped ridge, which is part of the Kashaya Hill. Situated at a height of 1800 Mts., it is quite far away from the plains and thus provides the tourist with a serene, enchanting surrounding. Almora was founded by Raja Kalyan Chand of the Chand dynasty in 1560 AD, when he shifted his capital here from Champawat. For years after that, Almora remained under the control of not only the Gorkha invaders, but also the British Colonialist who made it their Headquarters. These people left their own district mark, which is still reflected in Almora's social and cultural ethos. Ever since then this ancient capital of Kumaon, has blossomed into a spectacular hill resort, abundant in natural beauty. This is manifested in its rich forest, varied fauna and the picturesque hill stations, which attract the tourists in large numbers each year. Its pleasant climate offers a welcome relief from the scorching heat of the plains in summer. Thousand of pilgrims and devotees gather at Almora every year in the early autumn to celebrate the famous Nanda Devi Festival. This Goddess is highly revered among the Kumaonies. One can also find beautiful gardens, orchards and religious centers sprawled all over this district, which enhance it beauty all the more. For those who seek tranquility and solitude and want to be one with nature, Almora is the place to reckon with.
