Nainital is commonly known as the 'Lake City', as the city is located around the 'Nayana Tal'. The city is a beautiful mixture of all the colors of nature. This mesmerizing example can be seen in the first look of the city itself. On one hand, where the city surrounds the lake, then on the other hand it is surrounded by seven hills known as "Sapta-Shring" which consist of the following hills- Ayarpata, Deopata, Handi-Bandi, Naina, Alma, Lariya-Kanta & Sher-Ka-Danda. Nainital used to be the summer capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh during the British regime and remained so for many years even after Independence. As per the legend, when Lord Shiva was carrying the body of his consort Sati, who jumped into the sacrificial fire-Havankund which was organized by her father Daksha Prajapati; her (Sati's) eyes dropped out at this place and thus this place came to be known as Nayana Tal or Nainital. Mr. P. Barren of Shahjahanpur first discovered the city of Nainital in the year 1841. When he first saw this place, he was simply moved by the mystifying beauty of the place. He thereafter got a house built here and named it as the "Pilgrim Cottage". Naina Devi Temple It is a beautiful hill resort. The Naina Devi temple is dedicated to Goddess Naina Devi. Nainital gets its name form Naina Devi. The place has picturesque surroundings in a lake. Seeta Bani Temple It is at a distance of 20 kms. from Ramnagar. The place where the temple is situated is called Seeta Bani. According to Mythology, Devi Sita had entered into the lap of earth here. A large fair is held here on Ram Navami. Garjiya Devi Temple This temple is situated as a huge rock in the middle of river Kosi at a distance of 10 kms. from Ramnagar on the way to Dhikhala. This place has been named Garijiya after the deity. The deity is highly regarded in the region. a large fair is held here on Kartik Purnima. Haira Khan Temple It is situated about 22 kms. from Kathgodam, near village Syuni. It is a beautiful place dedicated to Baba Haira Khan. A large fair is organized here on Shivaratri. |
