This is Madhya Pradesh’s only hill station. It is an ideal place to escape the summer heat of central India. Captain Forsyth of Bengal Lancers discovered it in 1857. The point from where he first saw this place used to bear his name but now it is known as Priyadarshani Point. He saw in this saucer shaped valley nestled in the Satpura ranges, a potential for growth as a health resort. Later, on his advice the Britisher's built a sanatorium here.

Panchmarhi stands at an altitude of 1067m.

TOURIST INFORMATION

There is a tourist information center at the bus stand. Besides providing you with brochures and maps, they even arrange guides.

Regional tourist office next to HOTEL Amaltas also provides the necessary information regarding Panchmarhi.

MP Tourism and SADA run most of the accommodation in Panchmarhi.

ACCESSIBILITY

ROAD: It is connected by a daily bus service to Bhopal, Indore, Nagpur and Pipariya. Besides you can hire a taxi or a car from MP tourism.

TRAIN: The nearest railhead is Itarsi, which can be reached from Allahabad, Bombay, Delhi, Bangalore, Indore and Lucknow. The nearest station is Pipariya (47km) on the Bombay –Howaha line.

SHIVRATRI MELA

This fair is held on the occasion of SHIVRATRI at the Mahadev temple, which is 10km from Panchmarhi. A congregation of nearly 10,02,000 pilgrims, sadhus and adivasis participate in the celebrations, and plant symbolic 1,00,000 tridents on top of the CHAURAGARH HILL.

TEMPLES

JATASHANKAR CAVE TEMPLE

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva; it is located in a gorge, which is at a distance of nearly 2km from the bus stand. The much-revered shrine is hidden under a huge overhanging rock.

CHAURAGARH TEMPLE

This is located on a hilltop at a distance of 4km from Mahadev.

 

PRIYADARSHANI POINT

This point marks the site from where Captain Forsyth first saw the modern hill station of Panchmarhi and visualized it as having potential for a health and a hill resort. It was earlier named after him.

BISON LODGE

This lodge was Panchmarhi's first lodge and was built by Captain Forsyth in 1862. It is now a museum.

BEE FALLS

There are several waterfalls in Panchmarhi. However the most easily accessible are the BEE FALLS.

APSARA VIHAR

This can be reached from JAISTAMBH (a landmark in Panchmarhi, it marks a 7 way junction). It is small natural shallow pool ideal for picnickers.

RAJAT PRATAP This waterfall is over 110m high.

JALAWATARAN (DUCHES FALL). This fall is ranked as the most beautiful waterfall in Panchmarhi.

MAHADEO HILLS

The Bison Lodge built by Captain Forsyth in 1862, serves as a museum now. An attempt has been made in the museum to showcase the history of the area and the flora of the Satpura region. Every night for six days (except Mondays), a free wildlife film is shown in the open-air theatre here.

MAHADEO HILLS

Near the hill resort of Panchmarhi, are Mahadeo Hills where there are rock paintings dating back to the Mesolithic period.
