Kohima is the capital of Nagaland and boasts of an exotic tribal culture. It is located amidst picturesque surroundings and is the centre of some of the most sought after tourist destinations.

This charming place became famous all over the world during World War II, when the Japanese attacked Kohima and occupied more than half of the city. Their advance was however checked by the British, who had set up a post at Kohima when they entered Assam during the 19th century.

Kohima is situated at an altitude of 1500m above sea level.

A WAR CEMETERY

This is a war memorial raised in honor of the officers of the Second World War, which symbolizes the supreme sacrifices made by these officers. Each of the stone markers of the cemetery has a polished bronze plaque commemorating the men who died here. A flowering cherry tree, used by the Japanese as a sniper's post, was destroyed during the war and what is left now is just an old stump, showing the limit of the enemy advance.

This cemetery is set amidst scenic environs with well-maintained green lawns and rose bushes. Two tall crosses stand out at the lowest and highest points of the cemetery. The upper cross carries a famous inscription, "When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow we gave our today."

KOHIMA VILLAGE (BARA BASTI)

This village was considered to be the origin of Kohima and is quite old. Located on a hill that rises steeply, the entrance of the village is marked by a traditional Naga ceremonial gateway, which sports beautiful carvings of motifs of guns, warriors and symbols of prosperity.

NAGALAND STATE MUSEUM

This museum houses anthropological exhibits of the different Naga tribes. Thus, the display of masks, jewelry, headgears , gateposts, a ceremonial drum etc., provides a glimpse into the Naga culture. A number of birds and animal exhibits are also kept in this museum.

DIMAPUR

Dimapur is an important commercial centre of Nagaland, where most of the trading is done. It was once the capital of the Kachari Kingdom. Thus one can get a view of the remaining relics of the Kacharis, which includes a huge brick-built arch, huge mushroom-shaped monoliths lying upside down and numbering thirty etc. The origin of these monoliths is still unknown. Situated at an altitude of 195m above sea level, Dimapur is also a storehouse of exquisite handicrafts and hand woven shawls.

This beautiful hill city acts as a principal entry point for Nagaland. Its only airport is connected with Calcutta and Guwahati, making it easily approachable.

CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL

This famous cathedral is located at the Aradura Hill. It is an important tourist destination of Kohima, as it is one of the biggest cathedrals in the whole of northeastern region.

DZUKOU VALLEY

This picturesque valley is located to the south of Kohima, behind the Jopfu peak. This is one of the best trekking spots in the northeastern region and provides a spectacular view of the mountains and the surrounding landscapes. It is located at an altitude of 2438.4 m above sea level.
