Ajmer is 130 km Southwest of Jaipur. It is a flourishing town on the shore of the
Ana Sagar, flanked by barren hills. Situated in a valley Ajmer is a major religious center
for Muslim Pilgrims during the fast of Ramzan and also has some excellent examples of
Muslim Architecture. This place is also famous for the tomb of Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti,
a medieval Sufi-Saint. Other monuments which stand as reminders of Ajmers colonial
past are the Edward Memorial hall, Ajmer club and Jubilee clock tower. The main streets of
Ajmer are full with traffic, walking people and busy bazaars. One street sells nothing but
Silver items. This place has got some impressive architecture, an ancient fort (Taragarh)
providing a view to the town and is an important religious centre. History The town of Ajmer has always had great vital importance due to its secured position. The Aravali Range protects it. Ajaipal Chauhan founded this place in the 7th century. He constructed a hill fort and named the place "Ajaimeru" or Invincible Hill. Chouhans ruled Ajmer until the late 12th century. When Prithvi Raj Chauhan lost it to Mohammed of Ghori. It became part of the sultanate in Delhi and remained so until 1326. Late in its history Ajmer became a favourite residence of the great Mughals. |
