No city in Rajasthan is quite as
romantic as Udaipur, even though the state has many
palaces, fantastic hilltop forts and legends of chivalry and heroism. The French
Impressionist painters would have saved this place, called the "Venice of East
". Indeed with its beautiful places surrounded by lakes and rolling hills, Udaipur
looks as though it has been lifted straight from the pages of a fairytale book. This
"Oasis" in the desert has become a jewel of Indias tourism Industry. In
Udaipur there are places to suit all tastes and pockets. There are brilliant views of
Udaipur from the Monsoon palace (Sajjan Garh) situated on a nearly mountain. Udaipur is
the center for crafts and the performing arts, and its school of miniature painting is
noteworthy.
Maharana Udai Singh II founded Udaipur in 1568. Maharana Udai Singh II died in 1572 and was succeeded by his son, Pratap, who bravely defended Udaipur from subsequent Mughal attacks and bravely fought at the battle of Haldighati in 1576. After struggling against the Mughals, Udaipur was later attacked by Marathas. After India's Independence, Forests, lakes and the Protective Aravali Range surround Udaipur. |
