Kodaikanal is also known as Kodi. Kodi is the only hill station in the India that was set up by the Amercians who were later on joined by the Britishers .It is situated on the Southern part of the Palani Hills.It is at an altitude of 2100m. There is also one of the most prestigious private school in Kodai Known as KodaiKanal International school. Also,one of the unique shrub, named as Kurinji is found in KodaiKanal. This shrub has light, purple-blue coloured flowers , it flowers in every 12 years (the next blossom will be in the year 2004).

KodaiKanal is the best place to stay during the hot summers, and to avoid the heat and haze of plains. This place also provides an opportunity to hike in the quiet shola forests. The main season is from April to June or August to Oct. In Nov./Dec there is lot of rain .The tender Temp. Ranges from 11deg.c to 20deg.c in summers and 8 0C to 170C in winter.

ASTROPHYSICAL LABORATORY

This laboratory was built in 1889. This is situated on the highest point in this area. This laboratory is 3km’s from Kodai Lake. This place has also got a small Museum, which is only opened on Friday.

PARKS & FALLS
There are plenty of parks and waterfalls in Kodaikanal. Bryant Park is a botanical park, which was landscaped and stocked by the British Officer Mr.Bryant, after whom the garden was named. Another famous park is the Chettiar Park, which is about 3km uphill from town. This park is very near to the Kurinji Andavar Temple. There are also a number of waterfalls at this place like silver cascade,which is situated on the road which goes up to Kodai .Another famous fall is the Bear shola fall, this place is a famous Picnic spot. These falls have been named so because it once attracted the bears.

            

KURINJI ANDAVAR TEMPLE

It is a small temple, which is dedicated to Murugan, which is associated with Kurinji flower. This flower blossoms once in 12 years. From this temple you can have excellent views of northern & Southern plains. This place is near Chettiar Park.

On the journey from Kodaikanal to Palani, the tourist can see some beautiful views .The Malaikavil temple that is situated on the Palani hills has been dedicated to Murugan. This temple has got more then 656 steps which lead to the inner shrine, the image of the deity is said to have miraculous powers .This is a very important site for Pilgrimage. More then 2,00,000 pilgrims gather each year here in January .The temple is very popular. An electric lift has been installed over here to carry sick & old devotees to the top.
