Melghat

Located in the Amravati district of Maharashtra, is the Melghat National Park. It enjoys a special status as a Tiger Reserve. The park area is 311 sq. km with an additional protected area of 1571 sq. km.

The park is situated in the Gauri Logarh hills. The special feature of the park is the Mkain ridge, which rises to a height of over 1,000-m. along the northern border of this reserve, flows the river Tapti.

The vegetation can be classified as tropical dry deciduous. The forest area consists mainly of Teak trees.

The wildlife is represented by Black Buck, Lesser Bandicoot Rat, Jackal, Leopard, Wild Dog, Sambar, Barking Deer, Chinkara, Spotted Deer, Bluebull, Antelope, Wild Pig, Gaur and of course the Tiger.

The best period to visit the park is between January - June. Vehicles, to explore the park, are available on hire. Accommodation is available at the forest rest houses. For details regarding the park one should contact the park authorities stationed at Amravati.
