Kangchenjunga

Located in the north Sikkim district of the state of Sikkim, lies the magnificent KANGCHENJUNGA NATIONAL PARK. The scenic beauty of this park leaves a visitor spellbound. It casts an indelible impression on the visitor. It is ringed by majestic mountain peaks and glaciers on three sides. The third highest peak of the world – Kangchenjunga (8.586 Mt.) which can be seen from the park, is one of the main attractions of this park.

The park stretches over an area of 850 sq. km, with the altitude ranging between 1830m-8586m.The vegetation varies with the altitude. At the lower level are the temperate forests, which give way to high mountain forests with increase in latitude. At higher level there are only bare rocks and ice. Oak, Rhododendron, Larch, Spruce, Fir, Birch, Willow are some of the species of trees that grow here.

The park has a myriad population of wildlife and birds, due to the large range of altitude. The fauna is represented by common Langur, Marbled Cat, Musk Deer, Wild Dog, Red Panda, Clouded Leopard, Snow Leopard, Tibetan Wild Ass, Tibetan Argadis, Red Fox, Binturong, Goral, Himalayan Tahr, Bharal, Takin etc. Red Headed Frogon, Woodpecker Sp., Satyr Tragopan, Asian Emerald Cuckoo and Blood Pheasant represent the avian population.

Besides the attractions which nature provides in the park, the centuries old Tolung Gompa (located in the south of the park) is also a source of attraction for visitors especially the devout Buddhists.

The ideal period to visit the park is April-May and August-Oct. The nearest town is CHUNGTHANG (20 km), nearest railway station is NEW JALPAIGURI and the nearest airport is at BAGDOGRA. Rest Houses are available and information regarding availability of accommodation can be obtained from the park authorities.
